OTTOBRE 2010, NEW YORK MET:  IL TROVATORE

As Manrico, the troubadour of the opera’s title, the admirable Argentine tenor Marcelo Álvarez, who sang the role when the production was new, had a good night. His singing was radiant, ardently lyrical and full of tenorial ping. As before, he transposed the killer aria “Di quella pira,” in which Manrico rouses his rebel troops to save his Gypsy mother from the count’s clutches, down a half-step, to spare himself the final high C (which is not in Verdi’s score but which opera buffs have come to expect). Mr. Álvarez tossed off a gutsy high B. A version of this review appeared in print on October 28, 2010, on page C1 of the New York edition
